Why is the Tasmanian Government repurposing the Treasury Building Complex?

On 10 November 2024, the Tasmanian Government announced its intentions to explore opportunities to repurpose the Treasury Building Complex.

The site, known as the Treasury Building Complex, has a net lettable area of approximately 5,094 square metres and is in central Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It has frontages on Murray Street, Macquarie Street and Franklin Square, with a smaller building bounded by Davey Street.

The eight buildings forming the Treasury Building Complex were constructed between 1824 and 1957 and are permanently registered on the Tasmanian Heritage Register.

The current occupants of the complex include approximately 250 Tasmanian Government staff from the Department of Treasury and Finance, and the Government’s Courier Service and Ministerial Drivers.
